1000 Ways Album has been funded!

Posted on November 8th, by theadmin in Uncategorized. No Comments

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all who helped me reach my funding goal to release my upcoming album.

It’s been a journey for sure, but I could not have done this without your help.  Thanks to you, I have enough funds to release the album that I’ve been working on for the past two years.  The recording, mixing, and mastering is complete, and now the next step is to finish the art layout and design so that I can send everything to be manufactured.

I anticipate the album to be available to the general public early next year, but everyone that helped with the fundraising campaign will get it before then.

And since I reached my goal, the campaign was selected for an extended “In Demand” period, where people can still contribute and receive a copy of the album … Read More »

Brown Goes East

Posted on July 1st, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

So, I moved…

As of this evening, I am officially a Chicagoan living in rural Virginia.

It’s weird.  But it makes up for it by being super pretty out here.

Don’t worry, Chicago, I’ll be back to hang out soon…

Moving On

Posted on June 29th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

22 years ago, I came to Chicago. I’ve spent my entire adult life in this city. It made me who I am, for better and worse.

Chicago has taught me to be open, mindful, and respectful. But to also take shit from nobody. It has fed my ego, without ever failing to humble me. It has introduced me to, and shown me who my true friends are.

It’s also spoiled me rotten. Chicago has just about everything at its fingertips. I’m going to miss that.

I’m going to miss all of it.

And tomorrow morning, it will be time to move on with a lump in my throat that feels like the size of my fist.

Until we meet again…

“They tell me Chicago is bitter, and broken, and cold. But I know Chicago is beautiful when it snows…”

Run Rabbit Run

Posted on June 3rd, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

One last show before I disappear out East.  I know, I know, the Schuba’s concert was supposed to be my last, but how could I possibly say no to such a wonderful opportunity to raise money for mental health research and suicide prevention?  I’ll be here this afternoon with several of my friends — covering Frightened Rabbit songs and taking donations to help out those that need it.

A Schuba’s Goodbye

Posted on May 9th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Last night at Schuba’s was more sweet than bitter, but bittersweet nevertheless. I hope to be back in Chicago making music soon, but for the time being, I have 22 years of memories of playing shows in this city that I’ve been privileged to call home. It was a pleasure to see such a warm collection of friends and musical partners last night.

To my band: you are all astounding. You make this fun. This is not over by a long shot.

Loot

A friend posed the question, “What loot would drop from me when I die?”

I thought about how I would answer that question, and realized immediately that it would probably be guitar pics.

Why I Fucking Love the Chicago Music Scene: Vol. 1

Posted on February 2nd, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Jessica Varela wrote a song called Bubbles, that I borrowed a line from to write a song about a girl called Still Learning. Jeff Churchwell wrote a response to that song called Feeling/Falling. I wrote a response in support of my earlier song called Falling Apart. Tomlinson Fort wrote a response to that called Not Feeling the Falling. I was in that band. Morgan Foster wrote a song called April Says Goodnight, and joked about how he would someday write a smaller song to fit in the pause of that song. Every time I heard it, I bugged him about when he would finish it. He wrote a song in response to Tomlinson’s song called The Feeling of Jeff Brown Falling (I didn’t see that one coming). He put it in the middle of April Says Goodnight. Because the world … Read More »

Studio update!

Posted on August 1st, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

The album is getting closer and closer!  Tracking is nearly complete, and after that, all that remains is the mixing and mastering…

And naming, and artwork design and layout, and all the other slightly less glamorous but no less important stuff.

And then I can share it with the world!

Also, seriously, I should probably name this thing soon.

…and then life got in the way

Posted on March 10th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

My friends, my fans, and whoever else reads these,

Life has gotten complicated.  Mostly good, but complicated nevertheless.  A lot of personal things that I’ll be vague about have been brewing for a few months now, and as a result, I haven’t been able to plan and perform very much.  Part of that is in an effort to finish my second full-length, but the vast majority is behind the scenes.  I’ll still be writing as much as I can, performing here and there, and working on finishing the album, but owing to everything else happening, the big tours and pushes to perform and get my music out is sadly going to have to take a back seat to the rest of my life.

Hopefully once this all clears, I will have the chance to get back up on this all.  I’m far … Read More »

Fall Updates

Posted on October 7th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

After a spring and summer filled with touring, it’s been refreshing to have had a relatively calm few months.  As of now, there are only a few shows left on the books for this year – The New Black is performing next week after nearly a year off, as a result of our bassist’s injury, and I’ll be skipping over to Swisher, IA for a one-off show at the Cedar Ridge Winery & Distillery a few days after that.

If the whiskey and wine don’t keep me, I’m hoping to finish the album when I get back, and start turning up the energy for 2017.  I’m anxious to start getting back on the road, and hopefully in the air for a return to Europe next Spring (booking now for UK dates in April & May!)

I hope to have more news for … Read More »

Summertime in Chicagoland…

Posted on May 27th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

It’s going to be a busy one.  Once I returned from Europe, I was concerned that it was going to be a slow summer.

Clearly I was wrong.

I’m beginning the month of June with a special event: the premiere of a musical that my dear friends wrote the book for, and asked me to write the accompanying music.  It’s called Tenure Track, and it’s earned a spot in the Premiere Premieres Festival in Chicago beginning on Thursday, June 2nd.

Check out the poster below for the rest of my performances throughout the upper Midwest for the month of June.

Europe. Was. Amazing.

The jet lag hasn’t worn off yet, and already, I’m planning and scheming as to how to get back next year…

But until then, seriously, the jet lag is wrecking me.  Sleep soon.  And then back to work on the new recording.

And then probably some more sleep.

Goodbye, Heathrow! See you again soon!

Metro memories

Posted on June 6th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Last night was one of the best shows I remember being a part of.  I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by amazing musicians as The New Black headlined Chicago’s Metro for the very first time.  Everyone involved in the night has my love and thanks for being a part of such an important event.

And, now that the dust has settled, I can say that I’ve been planning the special surprise at the end of the set for the past year.  I went and proposed to the beautiful woman that I’m going to spend the rest of my life with.

It was a good night.

March to Spring!

Posted on March 5th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Happy March, everyone!  It’s been a little while, but there are a lot of things cooking this month and into the future for Jeff Brown…

Tonight starts a month filled with shows and showcases — I’m delighted to be a part of the CAUDog Records showcase at the Underground WonderBar’s Roots Room at 8pm, alongside a whole bunch of friends and label-mates.  But that’s just the beginning!

Next Monday and Tuesday, I’m helping to debut a musical that I’ve been providing the music and music direction for.  Yes, that’s right…  a musical.  It’s called Tenure Track, and is written by a college friend and her writing partner.  We’re having a staged reading with live music (provided by Jeff Brown & the New Black) at the Apollo Theater studio (right downstairs from where Million Dollar Quartet plays).  Tickets are going fast for both … Read More »

Happy October everyone!

We’re happy to announce that our next album will be produced again by Chicago Acoustic Underground’s label, CAUDog Records.

But until then, there are several chances to spend some time with us.

This Friday, October 3rd, I will be joining Sarah Blick on violin and vocals and Alex Gilewicz (of The Aldermaniacs) on cello and vocals at the Uncommon Ground on Clark Street. Music starts with us at 9:00pm. No Cubs game means plenty of parking!

Cutting Ties EP Release

Posted on June 18th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

My friends, the work is finally complete on the upcoming Acoustic EP, and I am thrilled to announce that I’m releasing it on Wednesday, August 13th at the Mayne Stage in Chicago…

Mixing is complete, and mastering should be done by next weekend.

I look forward to sharing the new work with all of you.  Joining me that night will be my good friends in Common Shiner (who will also be premiering their new video that evening), and the amazing Brittany Moffitt.  I have known both acts well for several years now, and believe me when I tell you that the 13th is going to be filled with as much talent as the Mayne Stage can hold…

See you there!

Happily Ever After…

Posted on June 16th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

They say that if you’re good at something, never do it for free.

I say, if something makes you happy, find a way to share it with as many people as possible.

This song never really wanted to be on an album, so I let it stand on its own. It’s free if you want. You can pay for it if you want. What I want is for people to let it into their lives. This song is special to me, and my hope is that I will never be the only person who can say that.

Enjoy, my friends. And spread the word if you please.

No, seriously, like THE Metro.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend like this isn’t a giant deal to me. Because it is. And I want to share it with all of you.

Brand new surprise EP

Posted on January 23rd, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

As you may know, I’ve been working since last year on an Acoustic EP.  My drummer had recently moved to LA, so I found myself sans percussion.  My focus turned both to finding a replacement and also to my quieter, more acoustic material.

So I began a solo EP of songs that didn’t need the full band treatment.

And then I started a project at work that kept me real busy for about seven months.

So now I’m just about done with the tracking process of my upcoming Acoustic EP, but in the meantime, I’m releasing a surprise EP recorded earlier this month in Madison over two and a half days of subzero temperatures.  It’s called Madison or Bust, and I’m releasing it on my birthday today!

You can get it from my bandcamp site for only $5 (or more if you feel so … Read More »

Madison or Bust

Posted on January 2nd, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

I’m excited to announce that next week I will be traveling to Madison, WI to record with Julia McConahay at Deerpath Studios.  Where will these recordings go?  Who knows!  Maybe an EP, maybe the beginnings of a new album, maybe hidden away in the crevices of my external hard drive with hundreds of Mb of other recordings.  Either way, I’m excited to make my way up there (although whose idea was it to go in winter?)

Updates to come!

Jeff & the Matrimony?

Posted on August 6th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

There comes a time in a solo singer-songwriter’s life when he gets together a semi-permanent group of musical partners and conspirators, and they make awesome music together, and he looks at it all and says, “This is good.”

There occasionally comes a time in that same singer-songwriter’s life when he realizes that it’s both inaccurate and perhaps a bit egotistical to keep on billing the act by his name alone.

My friends, that time is now.

I have built a wonderful relationship with three dear friends, and together we have been making some seriously beautiful music.  While I re-tool my full band, I have been going out as an acoustic 4-piece act with Eric Stafford on guitars, Sarah Blick on violin and vocals, and Liz Chidester on vocals.

The realization came suddenly that – among the group of us – we had something old, … Read More »

Acoustic EP is fully funded! And then some!

Posted on May 19th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

I wanted to thank each and every one of you for helping to reach my funding goal. And then some! Not only did you help me meet the goal, but through your generosity, the goal was surpassed. I am blessed and humbled.

Musicians face rejection every day of their lives in one form or another, and I am not immune to this — but moments like these let me know that what I’m doing is important, and that there are people who care and value the art that I love. They are invaluable, as are you.

Thank you, all of you, for being a piece of this album. I will not let you down.

Studio sessions continue…

Acoustic EP in the works…

Posted on May 1st, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

I have begun the process of recording an acoustic ep.  After my debut album with the full band, which I am incredibly proud of, I wanted to come back and visit what it is that made me the musician I am — the art of sitting down with a piece of wood and playing a song.  Intimate, beautiful, and simple.  After all, sometimes, all a song really needs is a singer and an instrument and an audience…

Before I start work on the follow-up to Last Chance, I would like to take some time to bring a host of new and old songs back to the basics and give you all an EP of fully acoustic songs to tide you all over, also to be released on CAUDog Records.  These past few months have been tumultuous, and from that has come … Read More »

Doing Stuff! 2013 Tour (part 1)

And I discovered that it was all local.

So I started booking a Summer Tour!  Details coming soon,  — I hope to be announcing dates by early June.

Spring News! So much news!

Posted on March 20th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Oh goodness, it’s been a minute since I’ve last given you an update.  And that’s because I’ve been incredibly busy.

The album release party at the Hard Rock Cafe last month was incredible, but I won’t lie – it was a lot of work, and after that I needed a little break.  But all good breaks are short-lived, so it was back to work.  I recently accompanied a band to Austin, TX for the annual SXSW conference.  First time in Austin, and first time at SXSW.  It was an incredible experience, if not completely exhausting.  I was part of 11 showcases over four days — including four of my own!

But now I’m back home, and back to work.  I spent much of February writing a whole cascade of new material, and Austin got a pretty good taste of it, but now … Read More »

Two Remaining Shows in 2012

Posted on October 16th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

The band has been added to a pair of high-profile shows to end the year — after taking the month of October off to rest and regroup, we will be performing twice before the end of the year.

On Friday, November 16th, the band is opening the Chicago Roots Collective Annual Festival at the Beat Kitchen.  Doors open at 7pm, and I play sharp at 8pm.  I’ll be joined by fellow CAUDog label mates The Future Laureates, as well as A Band Called Catch, Molehill, and The Ewing Theory.  Tickets are only $10, and you can get them online here before they sell out!

And just in time for the holidays, the band is happy to be a part of CAUDog label showcase to celebrate Matthew Morgan & the Lost Brigade’s album release!  We’re playing at the Double Door on Friday, December … Read More »

It’s true!  Not only do you have three chances across the Midwest to see me perform for FREE this weekend, but I have a confirmed date and location for my Album Release!

First things first…

This weekend is the Coyote Festival of the Arts in Wicker Park/Bucktown.  I am lucky to be performing on Friday night as Goodbyehome, as well as with my own band on Saturday afternoon.

Friday, September 28 at 8pm, Goodbyehome will be on the Club Lucky outdoor stage at 1824 W. Wabansia.  We’ll be joined by The Puffins, Sugarcreek Road, and the Aaron Williams Band.

Saturday, September 29th at 3pm, I will be at the Double Door with the full band (featuring Eric Stafford on lead guitar).  Double Door is footsteps away from the Damen/North/Milwaukee intersection, and admission is free with a Coyote Fest wristband (otherwise it’s only $5).

Last Chance Album Review – Adobe & Teardrops

Posted on September 20th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Rachel from Adobe & Teardrops had this to say about the album:

“Brown’s vocals — which I suspect are modeled after James Taylor’s attempts to sound unpolished — work best when surrounded with others’ voices. Also, the songs from “Grace” onward are more musically adventurous — ranging between jazz, classical, and roots, the sheer inventiveness of these compositions deserve your attention.”

Last Chance Album Review – Scene Magazine

Posted on August 10th, by jeff in Uncategorized. No Comments

Emily Clingman of Scene Magazine in Ft. Collins, CO had this to say about the album:

“Self described indie-folk artist, Jeff Brown has a lot going for him musically. His voice is smooth and windy, his lyrics haunting … Backed by an acoustic guitar, a violin and a divine female voice, melancholy lyrics …  still sound lovely amid the delicate harmonies and meandering string riffs. Brown’s 11-song album, Last Chance, is well worth the listen”

After a little over a year since we first began recording drum tracks, my very first album of original material on CAUDog Records is real.  It’s so real that it’s sitting in a box in my living room.  And now you all can have one!

As of 12:00am this morning, it is available digitally on Bandcamp, itunes, and cdbaby.  Unfortunately, none of the sites are carrying physical copies just yet, but that will change soon. Until then, there are two ways to get physical copies.  You can find them at any Chicago Acoustic Underground sponsored show.  Check out the schedule at www.chicagoacoustic.net.

Additionally, physical copies are available through me directly.  Send a message to jeff @ chicagoacoustic.net  and I will send you a payment address.  For $18 (covers the album cost, shipping, and the 2 mile round trip to the post office) I … Read More »
